Artist Renee Mak

Dreaming...  always one of my favorite things to do! I recently had the chance to put a show together  and I decided this piece was to be my  inspiration piece for the whole show. Interestingly enough, it was not finished at the time.   If you remember, I've been working on this and showing bits  and pieces of this for quite some time...  unfinished as it was. I've sold cards and prints, even had offers for the painting.   But deep down inside, like only an artist knows, it wasn't yet  time for us to part ways.   Something told me I still had work to do! This is the way it's looked for a little over a year.  I loved it... but still wanted it to say more. So while planning the show, it made perfect sense  to end with and build the show around this painting.    The name of my show is called "Evolution of a Dream", and it takes the viewer along a 5 year journe...

World Traveler by LolaBird I am a world traveler~ constantly traveling around the world on a fabulously colorful road trip of fun. Mixed media art journaling, cafe visiting, coffee drinking... hand made print making, children jumping, flowers blooming, boots are sparkling and I am home again! I love to paint on rainy days... Something about a rainy day makes me want to paint.  I love how quiet the world seems as the rain falls... as if there's nothing to do but stay in and create on canvas. To communicate through color... and try new things with paint, crayon and stencils. To let thoughts and ideas flow out onto the canvas while hiding in plain sight. Using fabulous found objects, like a vintage doily, to create interest and  draw the viewer to look closer. And create small paintings within larger paintings... These are some of the reasons I love to paint, on rainy days or any days! I began my latest project this week at the studio. Once I got clarity of the whole thing, I could begin gathering materials. One of the beginning elements for me is music. I feel like this breathes life to the canvas... and for this project, an old Hymnal is the perfect fit! The words of praise seem to anoint each piece and start to give them life. These particular canvases are 36" x 36"... and the music is enlarged over 400 percent! Next I add color... I continue to build up layers with more color...  stencils... drips... and pencil markings! This process will be repeated many times before these pieces are complete... so stay tuned!!!

More fun samples for an upcoming mixed media project! The point of what I'm doing is to practice layers of color... And in doing so, learn what the colors communicate... both together and to the viewer! The end goal is to find out what colors do both well. In other words... what colors, when together, communicate the message I wish to communicate in my paintings! What do you think!?!

I had an awesome day today in the studio. I began working on some samples to be used for an upcoming project... I love the bright colors! I also love that they have a life of their own! The way the colors dance on the page... makes me want to dance right along with them!!! And that's what I did....  today in the studio!
